Tree Pruning & Reduction in Christchurch
Good pruning makes a tree safer, healthier and better looking — and a crown reduction brings an overgrown tree back into proportion without removing it. We prune to arboricultural standards so your trees stay strong for years.

Crown reduction
Love your tree but not its size? We shorten branches back to healthy growth points to reduce height and spread evenly. The result looks natural — like a smaller version of the same tree — keeps the shade, privacy and character you enjoy, and reduces the load on heavy limbs.
Good reasons to reduce a tree
- Bring back sun to the house, garden or solar panels
- Reduce wind load and storm risk
- Clear views, roofs and neighbouring properties
- Keep a tree in scale with a smaller section
Why prune properly?
Every cut is a wound the tree has to seal. We make clean cuts in the right place, remove no more than the tree can handle, and never "top" trees — a practice that causes weak regrowth and decay.
Regular pruning reduces storm risk, improves the health of the tree and brings light back into your house and garden.
When is the best time to prune?
Most trees can be pruned year-round, but many deciduous trees are easiest in late autumn and winter when leaves are off. Flowering trees are usually best pruned just after they flower. We will advise on timing for your specific trees.

Tree Pruning & Reduction: common questions
How often should trees be pruned?
Most mature trees benefit from pruning every 2–5 years. Fast-growing trees and hedges need more frequent attention.
What is the difference between reduction and topping?
Reduction cuts back to healthy side branches and keeps the tree’s shape. Topping cuts through branches at random and causes weak, bushy regrowth — we don’t do it.
How much can a tree be reduced?
Usually up to about a third of the crown, depending on species and health. We will tell you honestly what your tree can tolerate.
Can you prune a tree that overhangs from my neighbour’s property?
You are generally entitled to trim branches overhanging your boundary. We recommend talking to your neighbour first and we can help plan a tidy, balanced result.
Will pruning harm my tree?
Correct pruning by a qualified arborist improves tree health. Harm comes from over-pruning, topping and poor cuts, which we avoid.
